RRC2140 – The world’s first multi-cell standard battery using prismatic Lithium-Ion cells

By now, a majority of the smart, multi-cell Lithium-Ion battery packs are equipped with 18650 cells.

Battery packs using prismatic cells are well known for consumer products (smart phones, wearable devices, etc.), typically using just one single cell, a minimum safety circuit and generally does not have intelligent battery management.

RRC is proud to release their first standard battery with multiple prismatic cells in 3s1p configuration, including a redundant safety circuit and smart battery management system, as is common for all our other battery packs. This new RRC2140 battery with just 8mm in thickness is extremely thin. It is designed to fit into very slim devices, such as the back of a PC display or part of a PC board, or in a tablet like device for the medical and industrial markets.

The new RRC2140 has an optimized capacity of 3880mAh at a nominal voltage of 11.4V. The overall energy density is 44.2Wh. The RRC2140 complies to the SMBus communication standard version 1.1 as well as the JEITA standard, which uses optimized charging profiles based on different temperatures.

As typical for all RRC batteries, the RRC2140 will comply with all worldwide approval standards for Lithium-Ion batteries. Therefore, our international customers will benefit from these worldwide certifications and approvals.

Are you ready to switch to the new safety standard IEC/EN 62368-1? We are!

In the past, and for our general products, we based our battery charger designs on the IEC/EN60950 for IT equipment and provided the compliance via a CB report.

This is separate from the requirements of our medical customers and their equipment.

However, these plans will change soon. On the date of 20th June, 2019, the new IEC/EN 62368-1 will replace the IEC/EN 60950 and IEC/EN 60065, as well as the low voltage directive. In the near future, we will have only one overall standard covering Audio/Video, IT and Communication equipment.

The new product safety standard called IEC/EN 62368-1 is designed around a hazard-based concept. In general, a device should consider a source of several potential hazards, which can affect humans, animals and/or objects. The hazard-based approach assumes that damage occurs when energy of sufficient strength and duration acts in a source of danger with a transfer capability that will harm a body and/or material. Of course, this has to be avoided without any exceptions.

RRC’s developers, including our engineering, manufacturing, quality, purchasing and product management teams, have had intensive training and qualification. We have prepared to face the upcoming changes and we have already integrated the hazard-based concept into our development and design process. Based on this knowledge, we will analyze our current battery chargers and look forward to developing your future charging devices.

RRC REstore storms the market

In industrial application of energy storage systems major drivers are not pure power, availability and durability.

Instead, it is more about a deep understanding of customers profit opportunities and the translation into a tailored concept to gain an early return on invest. RRC’s energy storage series REstore covers all these requirements in a single concept.

The modular and fully scalable design enables both the independent dimensioning of inverter and battery from 30kW/46kWh up to 1MW/1MWh.

RRC REstore storage system works either grid-connected or off-grid. The multi-level battery management system guarantees a safe and durable operation of the battery system.

The RRC developed operating system REN-OS enables a wide range of applications, e.g. due to easy and flexible connection of various energy sources. The smart control center is supervising the battery management and acts as communicator between the energy storage system and the outside world. Focus is managing and controlling challenging applications and operating modes, in particular the “multi-use” operation of the system to optimize profit.

A broad range of interfaces and remote communication options e. g. the browser-oriented parameterization / monitoring and diagnostic functions via tablet computer or smart phone round off the profile of REstore as an universally applicable energy storage system.
