IEC62133-2 2nd Edition is coming
IEC 62133-2, the international safety standard for portable lithium-ion cells and batteries, is getting a second edition (ED2). There is no official publication date yet, but forecasts suggest spring 2027. The current draft standard is still in the IEC process (drafts, TC/SC vote) – changes are therefore possible.
After the publication of the 2nd edition, it is likely that batteries and cells will need to be re-tested to ensure compliance.
RRC is continuously monitoring developments in ED2 and is already making preparations to implement any necessary adjustments as quickly as possible.
Key points of the 2nd edition:
- Adjustments to current market requirements and battery technologies
- Possible stricter safety checks and test methods
- Applies to all portable Li-ion cells and batteries
CNCA-C09-02:2025 - Update to the implementation rule for CCC certification in China
CNCA‑C09‑02:2025 is an update to the existing implementation rule for mandatory CCC certification of power banks and lithium-ion batteries/battery packs. The rule change was published on July 28, 2025, and came into force on August 15, 2025. It replaces the previous CNCA‑C09‑01:2023 for these product groups.
Key points:
- Affected products: Power banks/mobile power supplies (0914) and lithium-ion cells/battery packs (0915)
- Transitional rule: Existing valid CCC certificates remain valid; conversion takes place upon expiration, product modification, or standard updates.
- Certification bodies must update their rules and submit them to CNCA; new certifications will only be issued after approval.
Technical requirements & labeling:
No changes to RRC products are necessary.
RRC is actively monitoring developments and is in contact with certification bodies to prepare for implementation for its products as soon as they become necessary.
